Custom ESD rack and gas cylinder covers for a semiconductor equipment maker

A semiconductor equipment manufacturer in Malaysia wanted to protect the parts and gas cylinders in its hand-weld department. Nothing on the market fitted, so we designed it.

The problem

The hand-weld department sits beside precision machined parts and sub-assemblies for semiconductor tools. Those parts wait on open wire shelving and trolleys between operations.

Welding and grinding put dust, spatter and fine metal particles into the air. Bare wire shelves let that settle on the parts and scratch them. Gas cylinders stand in the same area, and their dirty valves and bodies sit close to clean work.

The team wanted every shelf and every cylinder covered, with a material that suited an electronics equipment plant. Standard covers did not match their rack sizes, and covers that did not fit would be left off.

How we worked

From the first visit to the finished product

  1. Walk the area

    We looked at how the racks and trolleys are used, how parts are loaded, and where the cylinders stand.

  2. Measure and draw

    We took the real dimensions of each rack and shelf, noted the posts, castors and access points, and drew a pattern for each cover.

  3. Choose the fabric

    We chose a blue ESD ripstop with a conductive grid. It is tough, easy to wipe, sheds little and is easy to see on the floor.

  4. Sample and approve

    A sample set went on the racks first. The team checked fit, access and ease of use, and we adjusted before the full batch.

The solution

  • Fitted shelf covers. Each shelf has its own cover that wraps the wire. Zips run along the edges, so a cover can be opened, lifted off and cleaned without moving the rack.
  • Gas cylinder covers. Drawstring covers with a round cap slip over each cylinder. The cap closes the top, and the drawstring seals the base.
  • One colour, one look. Blue covers make the covered area easy to see, and show at a glance when a cover is missing.
