ESD standards at a glance

ESD standards can look like alphabet soup. This is a short map of the main ones and what each is for.

The programme standards

Two standards describe a full ESD control programme. Most sites follow one of them.

StandardWhat it covers
ANSI/ESD S20.20An ESD control programme for protecting electrical and electronic parts, assemblies and equipment. Widely used in the Americas and Asia.
IEC 61340-5-1The IEC equivalent for protecting electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena. Common in Europe.
IEC 61340-5-3Requirements for ESD protective packaging.

The supporting standards

How they fit together

The programme standard says what you must control: people, surfaces, packaging, marking and checks. The supporting standards give the test methods and limits for each item. Your own ESD programme plan says how your site does it.

This is a summary, not the standard. Standards are revised, so always check the current edition. Your quality team or auditor decides which one applies to your site.
