ESD packaging: shielding, dissipative and moisture barrier bags

Not every ESD bag does the same job. The right choice depends on what you are protecting and where the bag will travel.

PackagingWhat it doesTypical use
Static shielding bagSurrounds the part with a shield, so outside charge does not reach it. Also limits charge build-up.Boards, modules and sensitive parts in transit and storage
Dissipative bagLets charge drain away slowly and resists charge build-up.Handling inside the protected area
Conductive container or trayGives a conductive path around parts.IC trays, tote boxes, component storage
Moisture barrier bag (MBB)Blocks moisture and usually has static shielding as well.Moisture-sensitive devices that need dry storage

How to choose

  • Where will it go? Inside the area only, or out on the road?
  • How sensitive is the part? If unsure, use shielding.
  • Is it moisture sensitive? Then you need a moisture barrier bag, desiccant and a humidity indicator card.
  • Size and closure. Zip-top, heat-sealed or open-top; measure the largest item.

Moisture-sensitive parts

Parts rated for moisture sensitivity are packed dry and sealed. Handling and floor-life rules are set in JEDEC J-STD-033. Use the packing method the part maker specifies.

Do not reuse a damaged bag. Check the bag marking and your own programme for the requirements that apply.
