Moisture-sensitive devices and moisture barrier bags

Some electronic packages absorb moisture from the air. If they are then reflowed, the trapped moisture can crack the package.

The packing set

  • Moisture barrier bag. A sealed bag with a low moisture transmission rate and ESD protection.
  • Desiccant. Absorbs moisture inside the sealed bag.
  • Humidity indicator card. Shows how much moisture is inside.
  • Warning label. Shows the moisture sensitivity level and the floor-life rules.

Moisture sensitivity levels

Parts are classified by moisture sensitivity level (MSL) under IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020. A higher level means a shorter allowed time out of the bag. Handling, baking and storage rules are in JEDEC J-STD-033. Always follow the part maker label.

Good practice

  • Seal bags after use with the desiccant and card inside.
  • Check the card when you open the bag.
  • Log the time parts are out of the bag.
  • Bake and re-pack as the label says.
Use the packing method set by the component maker and your own process.
